Drama Double Feature: The Bounty / Kings of the Sun

This 2-movie set of drama, adventure and history features a stellar cast including Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson, Daniel Day-Lewis, Yul Brynner and George Chakiris.

THE BOUNTY (Roger Donaldson, 1984): Based on the disastrous voyage of the HMS Bounty, this film stars Mel Gibson (Braveheart) as the rebellious crew leader Fletcher Christian and Anthony Hopkins (Howards End) as the stern Captain Bligh. Under Bligh’s autocratic rule, the Bounty begins an ill-timed voyage around Cape Horn. The crew approaches a breaking point, and Christian leads them in revolt. But Christian fails to grasp the dire consequences that await them all. This version of the infamous tale follows both the efforts of Fletcher Christian to get his men beyond the reach of British retribution, and the epic voyage of Lieutenant Bligh to get his loyalists safely to East Timor in the aftermath of a bloody mutiny.

KINGS OF THE SUN (J. Lee Thompson, 1963): Packed with intense action and thrilling drama, “Kings of the Sun” is a gripping historical epic that deserves to be seen. After a terrible battle leaves young Balam (George Chakiris) as the new king of his Mayan tribe, he leads his people out of Mexico to escape the rival clan still hunting them, but upon reaching their new home, a hostile Native American tribe attacks and the Mayans manage to capture Black Eagle (Yul Brenner), the Native American Leader. While held prisoner, Black Eagle manages to earn Balam’s respect and the kings agree to peace. But when Balam’s old rivals arrive, eager to start a war, the newly allied kings must take up arms and stand together in order to repel the invading force and save their people.

At Last, A Chance to Own Kings of the Sun for A Great Price This TGG Direct two feature of the third remake of “Mutiny on the Bounty”: 1984’s “The Bounty” with Mel Gibson as “Fletcher Christian” and Anthony Hopkins as “Captain Bligh” is the least compelling of the three, and 1963’s “Kings of the Sun” directed by J. Lee Thompson starring Yul Brynner and George Chakiris is worth it for its great widescreen transfer of the Mayan/Indian adventure primarily. Both transfers are widescreen and very good. Although I did…

I bought this for Kings of the Sun, an epic involving American Indians and Mayans.Basically, the Mayans under George Chakiris migrate to the US after being beaten by a rival Mayan clan. Here they run into Native American Yul Brynner (looking more like his Cossack Taras Bulba role than Native American) and his fellow Homeland Security force. Conflict arise between the two, but in the end, Yul and George band together to fight off the bad-tempered Mayans who follow George and his…
