When Richard (Joel Edgerton, Black Mass) and Mildred (Ruth Negga, World War Z) fall in love, they are aware of the eyes staring at them and the words said behind their backs. It is when they get married, however, that words and looks become actions, and the two are arrested. Even the historical bad guys and keepers of the too longstanding Jim Crow … Jeff Nichols’ entry into this year’s Oscar race is a player for sure. I have not seen any of his previous works, but I get the sense that he has mined a vein of south of the Mason/Dixon line ennui searching for a dignified space that formerly belonged, in more significant part, to Faulkner. American movies about race are always fraught with peril, no matter their quality. The obstacles of preachiness and predictability can, if run up against too often, yield a clinging smell of old tarpaper…

It just so happened that the woman of … I have to say that Ruth Negga absolutely was the heart and soul of this film, keep an eye on her in future projects this woman is a standout performer. Don’t get me wrong, Joel Edgerton had a challenging role in portraying the down home nature of Richard Loving, a simple man who was simply in love. It just so happened that the woman of his dreams was a black woman, Mildred Loving, a simple down home girl who truly loved her man. It did start out a bit slow but eventually settled into a nice…
