Life’s A Breeze is a charming comedy that follows a family struggling to stay afloat and together through hard times. The family is turned upside down when Nan’s (Fionnula Flanagan) unemployed slacker son Colm (Pat Shortt), and his niece Emma (Kelly Thornton) make a well-intended attempt to clean out her house and accidentally trash the mattress where she’s been stashing her life savings. Now they must overcome their many differences to lead their family in a race against time to find a lost fortune.

This should have been a great story, and parts of it were fun (when … I guess we just don’t get this kind of Irish humor. This should have been a great story, and parts of it were fun (when the grand-daughter helps her grandmother recover the treasure), but the characters are consistently ‘mean’ to each other, show no respect for life in general and use each other to the point of cruelty. They treat the mother as if she is only an elderly bother (they can’t wait for her to die) or a source of money even if it leaves her penniless, and are oblivious to any needs…

A great cast with a good story. Fionulla Flanagan was wonderful, perfectly cast in the role of the aging matriarch. Her dead-beat son was warm and charming, even though filled with flaws of his own making. The granddaughter, who opens the film, was a delightful surprise. Played by Kelly Thornton, she fit the role perfectly as the insecure, but spunky young teen who “gets stuck” babysitting her nan. The development of their relationship is the best part of this whacky romp through…
